The Autobiography of Horace Hopkins Shaw (1842-1921) Captain, First Maine Heavy Artillery - Citizen of Maine |
|
Horace H. Shaw was born in Hampden, Maine, in 1842. Mr. Shaw is well known in many circles as the co-author, along with Charles J. House, of the regimental history of The First Maine Heavy Artillery, published in 1903. In that book, Mr. House provided most of the personnel research while Mr. Shaw did the writing. The end result of their combined effort is a fine historical document of great value to Civil War Historians and aficionados. At about the same point in time, Horace Shaw had also written a comprehensive autobiography. His own story covers the period from 1842 until 1910 including his childhood in Hampden, his Civil War experiences, and his substantial business activities in Maine after the end of the War. This autobiography is just now being published. In addition to his own words, there are additional pages written by his Son, Winfield Lowrey Shaw, describing the Shaw family history in some detail. It is this complete set of documents, along with some material from other sources, which is presented in this book. Search Engine Included!
